Deer at Nara Park Walkway - Nara Park - Japan

See the Friendly and Sacred Sika Deer

One of the most unique and endearing aspects of Nara Park is its population of over 1,000 free-roaming deer. For a few yen, you can purchase deer crackers (shika sembei) to feed the deer or to lure them into the perfect photo pose. It is said that if a deer bows to you after receiving the cracker, it is a symbol of good fortune bestowed upon you.

According to a local legend dating back to the 8th century, a deity arrived in Nara riding on the back of a white deer. This deity, known as Takemikazuchi-no-Mikoto, was considered a divine messenger of the Shinto gods. With his arrival, the deer were elevated to the status of sacred animals, bridging the human and spiritual realms.
