One Month in Thailand: (Jump To)
What Airport For Thailand
Most travelers will start and end their 1 Month in Thailand Itinerary in the country’s largest city, Bangkok. Suvarnabhumi Airport is an international hub for many carriers. The airport is modern and easy to navigate, but airport security and customs run a little slowly, so plan some extra time.
How Much Does it Cost To Visit Thailand?
This, of course, depends on your budget and travel preferences, but overall visiting Thailand is extremely affordable. You can stay in lux hotels for as little as USD $200 per night. Less fancy places can easily be found for under $100 per night. If you’re a hostel user, you can find backpacker hostels for less than USD $20 per night. Bangkok and resort locations like Phuket will be more expensive.
Food is extremely inexpensive. Nice meals at sit-down restaurants are usually under USD $20 per person. Street food can be had for a buck or two. Thailand is affordable and you will find that it is easy not to break the bank during your one month in Thailand Itinerary.
1 Month Thailand Itinerary:
Week 1: Bangkok
Day 1-2: Bangkok Top Sights
Follow our Two Day Bangkok itinerary and our guide to visiting Chatuchak Weekend Market. On your first two days, you will explore Bangkok's highlights such as the Grand Palace, Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), and the Chatuchak Weekend Market.
Day 3: Local Markets
On day three of your one month Thailand itinerary book a day trip excursion to see the Maeklong Railway Market (Talad Rom Hub) and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.
We advise booking a tour to see the markets, as local buses can be uncomfortable, unreliable, and confusing.
The Maeklong Railway Market is famous for its unique setup, where vendors' stalls are located directly on the railway tracks. Local vendors at the market sell a variety of fresh produce, seafood, meats, spices, and local snacks.
One of the highlights of visiting the Maeklong Railway Market is witnessing the arrival of the train. Several times a day, a train passes through the market on the active railway tracks. As the train approaches, vendors swiftly retract their awnings and move their goods to make way for the train to pass, only to set up again as soon as it's gone. It’s one of the most Instagrammable spots in all of Bangkok.
At Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, you will traverse canals lined with boats selling a variety of goods and food items. Upon arrival you will board a boat. That boat weaves through the canals where you can buy a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, cooked dishes, souvenirs, and handicrafts from their boats.
While you can certainly buy one-of-a-kind items at both markets, the experience is the true reward. Return to your hotel in Bangkok in the evening.
Day 4: Ancient Temples and Ruins
Take a day trip to Ayutthaya to explore the ancient ruins and temples. Like the markets, it’s best to book an excursion from Bangkok for this experience.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the capital of the Kingdom of Siam and one of the most prosperous cities in Southeast Asia. As you explore the city, you'll get to see ruins of temples, palaces, and Buddhist monasteries dating back to the 14th to 18th centuries. This is one of many UNESCO World Heritage Sites you will see on our one month Thailand itinerary.
Many day trips to Ayutthaya include a scenic boat ride along the Chao Phraya River. This is a great way to see the city's waterfront temples and historic sites. It's relaxing to see Ayutthaya from a different perspective and enjoy the flow of the river.
Return to Bangkok in the evening.
Day 5: Traditional Silk and Relaxation.
Day five of you one month Thailand itinerary is all about relaxation. Start the morning with a visit to the Jim Thompson House for a glimpse into Thai silk heritage.
After lunch, make time to pamper yourself. Bangkok is renowned for its excellent spa facilities offering traditional Thai massages, aromatherapy, and other relaxing treatments.
End the day with a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya River, where you can sit back and admire the city's iconic landmarks and picturesque scenery.

Day 6: Ancient City
Visit the Ancient City (Muang Boran), an expansive outdoor museum spread over 200 acres, making it one of the largest outdoor museums in the world. It features over 100 replicas of Thailand's most significant historical landmarks, temples, palaces, and monuments. This will be an archaeological highlight of your one month Thailand itinerary.
Day 7: Chiang Mai Transit
Say goodbye to Bangkok. Our 1 month Thailand travel itinerary continues in Chiang Mai. Book a cheap flight on a local airline (like Thai Airways or Air Asia) to Chiang Mai. The flight will take just over an hour.
Chiang Mai International Airport is remarkably close to the city center. You can easily be in the heart of the city from the airport in ten minutes. Pre-arrange transport with your hotel in advance, or have some fun and hire one of the numerous tuk-tuk drivers to take you there.
Settle into your new hotel. If you have time in the evening this would be a perfect time to visit the famous night market. It’s great for food, shopping, and exploration. It stands up to multiple visits, so don’t be surprised if you return again this week.
1 Month Thailand Itinerary

Day 8: Explore Chiang Mai
Wake up on day 8 of your one month Thailand itinerary in magical Chiang Mai. Start the day with an ice-cold Thai iced tea. Then use day one of our Three Days in Chiang Mai Itinerary. You’ll explore the Old City, visit temples such as Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh, and experience the aforementioned night market.
Day 9: The White Temple
Take a day trip to Chiang Rai to see the famous White Temple. Read our visit guide to the White Temple here.
Return to your hotel in Chiang Rai for the night.
Day 10: Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep
Stay in Chiang Mai today to explore the hilltop wonder that is Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. Use day three of our Three Days in Chiang Mai Itinerary.
In the afternoon, book a local cooking class to learn how to make traditional Thai dishes. Northern Thai food is regionally unique defined by its diverse flavors, aromatic spices, emphasis on sticky rice, grilled meats, rich curries, and use of fermented foods.
Day 11: Doi Inthanon National Park and the Twin Pagodas
Start your day hiking in Doi Inthanon National Park. Jungle trails surrounded with unique plant life lead to unbelievably beautiful waterfalls and viewpoints overlooking mist-covered mountain vistas. These outdoor landscapes will be a highlight of your one month Thailand itinerary.
Be sure to include Wachirathan Falls on your hiking itinerary. It’s one of the largest in the country.
Make a stop at Phra Maha Dhatu Nabha Metaneedol and Nabhapol Bhumisiri. Commonly known as the Twin Pagodas these twin structures stand atop Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain.
Return to Chiang Mai.
Day 12: Golden Triangle Day Trip
Today you’ll go the furthest north of all of our Thailand one month itinerary, the Golden Triangle. This region is infamous for its former role in the illegal opium trade. The highlight of this trip is the chance to take a boat ride in the Mekong River while making brief stops in Laos and Myanmar.
While this wasn’t our favorite place in Thailand, the day was worthwhile overall. Read our full-day review and itinerary here.
Day 13: Choice Day
As you hit the halfway point of your magical time in Southeast Asia take the day to reflect on your time so far. Enjoy a day of rejuvenation with a Thai massage, or some casual shopping in Chiang Mai.
If relaxation isn’t your thing, book another popular day trip from Chiang Mai. Choices include The Blue Temple and Black House, a day at an elephant sanctuary, or kayaking and caving in Chiang Dao Valley.

Day 14: Transit to Cambodia
While in Thailand, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to visit Angkor Wat in neighboring Cambodia. (So, technically, this is a 27 days in Thailand and 3 days in Cambodia itinerary)
From Chiang Mai International Airport, book a trip to Siem Reap. You may have to connect in Bangkok so plan a pretty full day of travel.
When you arrive settle into your hotel to get ready for a big and exciting all-day visit to the ancient temple complex.
If you can, try to secure tickets tonight for two days at Angkor.
1 Month Thailand Itinerary

Week 3: Angkor Wat and Koh Samui

Use our guide to One Day at Angkor Wat to plan your day exploring the ancient temples. This is one of the most magical places on the planet and a day you will never forget.
Day 16: Sunrise at the Temples and The Killing Fields
Wake up before sunrise to witness the sunrise over Angkor Wat. This is a popular activity during a visit to Angkor. Plan your transportation and be sure to have your ticket secured (you should be able to use your ticket from Day 15) before going to be the night before. Also plan enough time to get a good viewing spot, as space fills up quickly and early.
Spend the rest of the morning and afternoon making a somber visit to the Killing Fields Genocide Museum. The museum memorializes the atrocities of recent history in Cambodia. It’s an important educational tool and a reminder about the dangers of social engineering and totalitarian rule.
In the evening plan to spend the night eating, shopping, and drinking at the Siam Reap Night Market.
Day 17: Travel to Koh Samui
Return to the airport to take your flight to Koh Samui. The Samui Airport is located right on the island of Koh Samui. You will likely need to connect through Bangkok again to reach your final destination. Plan for at least a half-day of travel. Check into your hotel and get ready for the final ten days of your one month Thailand itinerary.
Day 18: Beach Day
Start your day with a leisurely breakfast at a beachfront cafe. Head to one of Koh Samui's popular beaches, such as Chaweng Beach or Lamai Beach, to soak up the sun and relax on the sandy shores. You can rent beach chairs, umbrellas, and enjoy water sports like snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding.
As the day turns to night, head to a beach bar or restaurant to watch the sunset over the Gulf of Thailand. Many beachfront venues offer live music, fire shows, and beach parties in the evening, providing a great way to enjoy the island's nightlife. Koh Samui is a perfect place to relax and refresh at the halfway point of your 1 month Thailand itinerary.
Day 19: Island Natural Features
Explore the island's natural beauty by renting a scooter from your hotel or a local shop. The scooter will give you the freedom to easily visit some natural attractions on the island. Start with the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks).
Continue exploring some of the natural features of the inner part of the island. The Na Muang Waterfall is one of the most popular falls on the island. The nearby Wang Sao Thong Waterfall is much smaller but offers a picturesque swimming area.
Spend the afternoon at Ta Nim Magic Garden, a lush hilltop garden park with waterfalls, beautiful foliage, and moss-covered religious and art statues.
Day 20: Big Buddha Temple and Wat Plai Laem
Grab your scooter again today to visit the iconic Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) and the nearby Wat Plai Laem, known for its giant Guanyin statue and colorful architecture. Explore the temples, learn about Buddhist culture, and take in panoramic views of the island from the Big Buddha viewpoint.
Spend the evening at a local night market. Choose The Fisherman’s Village Night Market, one of the most popular night markets on Koh Samui. It’s open every night starting at 6 pm. The market features a wide array of stalls selling souvenirs, clothing, accessories, and handcrafted items. There is also plenty of delicious street food from various vendors. While you’re there you can enjoy live music, cultural performances, and explore the charming atmosphere of the historic Fisherman's Village.
Or visit Chaweng Night Market near Chaweng Beach. Open every evening, this market is known for its diverse selection of street food stalls serving Thai delicacies, seafood, grilled meats, and international cuisine. You can also browse through stalls selling clothing, accessories, gadgets, and souvenirs at affordable prices.
Day 21: Travel to Phuket
Booking a direct flight between Koh Samui and Phuket should be easy. The short flight will get you between the two islands in less than an hour. When you land in Phuket, check in to your hotel and settle in for the final week of your one month Thailand itinerary.

Day 26: Relax and Rejuvenate Day
Start the morning with some Yoga or meditation on the beach. Check with your hotel for some great local options. In the afternoon, book one last Thai massage and spa session. Take the day to immerse yourself in the hospitality and welcome nature of the country. Reflect on all the amazing things you’ve see on your one month Thailand itinerary.
In the late afternoon, book a ride to Promthep Cape. This is one of the best places in Phuket to watch the sunset. Stay locally or return to your hotel area for a beachfront dinner.
Day 27: Elephant Sanctuary or Jungle Adventure
Choose an ethical elephant Sanctuary to visit. Many sanctuaries will let you bathe the elephants, help feed them, and will give you plenty of elephant selfie opportunities.
**Visit Peta to view tips about picking an ethical elephant sanctuary.
Or, book a jungle adventure that includes ATV rides, ziplines, or hiking.
In the evening, book tickets for the popular Simon Cabaret Show. This flashy, over-the-top show celebrates the culture of Thailand in a bright and musical extravaganza.
Day 28: Return To Bangkok
In preparation for your international flight home, return to Bangkok. The direct flight from Phuket should take about 90 minutes.
Day 29: Shopping Day
Spend the day shopping. Visit some of Bangkok’s famous and abundant malls to secure some souvenirs from your trip and low-cost gifts for friends and family.
Visit a local supermarket to stock up on Thai spices and condiments so you can recreate some of the great food from the month when you get back home.
It’s always good advice to do your big shopping day at the end of your itinerary so you don’t have to lug around bags of souvenirs all month.
Day 30: Depart from Bangkok
With a month full of wonderful memories, board your flight home. We hope your one month Thailand itinerary was filled with a lifetime of memories.
