A delightful city in Western Massachusetts.
Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden
We start our list with a visit to the small garden dedicated to Dr. Seuss, who was born and raised in Springfield, MA. While small in size the garden packs in quite a few beautiful sculptures of Seuss’ most popular characters like the Cat in the Hat and the Lorax. The sculptures were designed by Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, Dr. Seuss’ stepdaughter.
Visiting the garden is free.
The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum
The new Dr. Seuss museum is a perfect combination of fun for kids and a tribute to the writer and creator himself.
The museum brings to life the characters from the stories in an immersive and colorful experience. Young fans of the work will absolutely love running around the museum and exploring all it has to offer.
The second floor of the museum recreates the artist's home and studio with original pieces.
Springfield Armory National Historic Site
A free visit to the Springfield Armory National Historic Site will give you the opportunity to view the world's largest historic US military small arms collection.
Nearly as old as the country itself, the armory started producing weapons in 1777. The site played an important role in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and is the site of Shay’s Rebellion.
Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame
The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is a museum dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the American sport of basketball. In 1891 the sport was invented in Springfield by museum namesake James Naismith. The physical education instructor was looking for an indoor sport that could keep local athletes fit during the cold winter season.
Inside the beautifully designed building, you’ll find loads of basketball memorabilia, and have the chance to shoot a few hoops of your own. I’m always up for a raucous game of H-O-R-S-E.
Connecticut River Walk and Bikeway
Springfield is the largest city on the mighty Connecticut River. It owes much of its founding and early wealth to the river itself. A fitting tribute is the paved walking and biking trail that runs along the riverbank.
There’s plenty of parking available at Riverfront Park, where you can get a great view of The Hampden County Memorial Bridge a stone arch bridge built in 1922.
