Tokyo is a foodie paradise. These five things were our favorites from a long list of amazing treats.

Taiyaki

These little delights are commonplace all over the streets of Tokyo. They’re made by putting a pancake-like batter into an iron mold shaped like a fish. The treats are then filled with red bean paste and served hot.

Kintsuba from Eitaro Sohonpo

If you liked the red bean filling of your taiyaki you’ll love Kintsuba.  It’s red bean paste dipped in a light batter, then baked. They’re best in their original round format from Eitaro Sohonpo at 1-2-5 Nihonbashi.

Takoyaki (Octopus Balls)

To your delight (hopefully) these are not the testicles of an octopus. These meatball-sized treats are made from wheat flour, bits of minced octopus, ginger, and onion, then topped with tempura scraps.

A great place to try Takoyaki is at one of the restaurants in the massive Skytree Town.

Suntory POP Soda

I was obsessed with this soda while in Japan. In fact, I’ve been hunting for a suitable replacement stateside, with no luck. It is the flavor of sweet melon. The closest I’ve come to recreating the flavor is with Midori liqueur, which I’ve since learned comes from the same manufacturer. Exploring Tokyo’s vast, seemingly endless array of vending machines is highly recommended.

Sushi (For Breakfast)

The fish are just perfect in Tokyo. Find a master sushi chef and join the line for some early morning sushi. They literally pull them out of the ocean and serve them to you within hours.  It doesn’t get fresher than this.
