Best Things to Do in London at Christmas

London is a fantastic city to visit during the Christmas season, as it transforms into a winter wonderland with festive decorations, lights, and numerous events. Here are some of the best Christmas things to do in London:

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland entrance

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park

This is one of the most popular Christmas events in London. It features a large ice rink, a Christmas market, fairground rides, and a variety of festive entertainment.

The sprawling event features countless food stalls serving up the best possible European food options. Fill up on delicious fish and chips, German sausages, chips (French Fries) with various toppings, Spanish churros, and so much more.

Alcohol is served as well. You can get many of your favorite beers and cocktails, but the star of the show is the mulled wines and ciders. It’s the perfect drink to warm your soul as you explore the park.

Many large-scale carnival rides are on site as well. We rode the world’s largest portable roller coaster and the fastest version of a tilt-a-whirl I have ever experienced.

Small stalls also sell local crafts, goods, and various take-home food items. It’s a wonderful place to grab a one-of-a-kind gift.

If you book some ride tickets in advance online, the entrance fee is waived. It’s also a great idea to book an early time slot for entry and start your day at the festival early. It gets very busy after 7 pm.

Trafalgar Square Christmas Market

Christmas Markets

Explore the various Christmas markets around the city, such as the Southbank Centre Winter Market, Leicester Square Christmas Market, and the Trafalgar Square Christmas Market. These markets offer a range of festive treats, unique gifts, and a cozy atmosphere.

Entry to all markets is free, however, for more popular markets you may have to wait for entry.

Hanover Square Ice Skating Rink

Ice Skating

London has several outdoor ice skating rinks set up during the Christmas season. Skate at iconic locations such as the Natural History Museum, Somerset House, or the Tower of London. Skates are included in the price and many locations offer little buggies to help kids (or other first-timers) stay upright on the ice.

Many ice rinks are located within the Christmas Markets or have their own small bar and shops adjacent to the ice.

Covent Garden Christmas Lights and Decorations

Christmas Lights

Take a stroll through central London to see the dazzling Christmas lights and decorations. Regent Street, Oxford Street, Carnaby Street, and Covent Garden are particularly famous for their festive illuminations.

It’s no coincidence that the famous shopping streets are also the best places to see Christmas decorations. Ride an open-top bus down Oxford Street for a dazzling view of the glimmering angels floating above the iconic shops.

Paddington Station Christmas Music

Christmas Carols and Concerts

Attend a Christmas carol service at one of London's historic churches or cathedrals, such as St. Paul's Cathedral or Westminster Abbey. Many venues also host festive concerts and performances during the season. Many of the larger Christmas Markets also have stages for performers.

Or keep it more casual and find carolers or members of the Salvation Army Band playing in the streets and train stations.

Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square

Every year, Norway donates a Christmas tree to London as a token of gratitude for British support during World War II. The tree is prominently displayed in Trafalgar Square and is accompanied by the Trafalgar Square Christmas Market.

Christmas Tea

Winter Afternoon Tea

Indulge in a festive afternoon tea at one of London's many upscale hotels or tea rooms. The Ritz, Claridge's, and Fortnum & Mason are known for their special Christmas-themed teas. The specialized Christmas Tea is a true splurge with most costing upwards of £45.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, most corner coffee shops have numerous Christmas-inspired snacks like gingerbread men or snowmen cookies for just a few pounds.

New Year's Eve Fireworks

If you're in London for New Year's Eve, don't miss the spectacular fireworks display along the Thames. Nothing beats hearing Big Ben as you literally ring in the new year. The best way to view the fireworks is on a river cruise on the Thames. You can also score a vantage point from many bars and restaurants that offer special New Year’s Eve packages.

The event typically requires tickets, so plan in advance. There are five main color-coded viewing locations. Access to the area will be restricted to ticket holders. The off-limits area includes much of the embankments of the Thames between Westminster Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge.

These are just a few of the many festive activities you can enjoy in London during the Christmas season. Be sure to check for any updates or changes to events, as details may vary from year to year.
