The colorful Italian island of Burano is easily reachable by boat from Venice. Using our day trip from Venice to Burano guide will help you easily navigate the trip to Burano on public transportation.
How To Get From Venice To Burano
The trip from Venice to Burano is surprisingly easy. Venice is a water city. In other cities, you would board the bus and travel to your destination. In Venice, you take the Vaporetto. The Vaporetto is essentially a bus boat. Tickets for the Vaporetto are available from numerous ticket booths and machines near boat stops (aka docks).
The most economical ticket is the all-day pass which allows you unlimited rides. These tickets cost €25. One-way tickets are €9. Tap your ticket on the yellow machine before entering the boarding area.
Use your favorite mapping app on the public transportation mapping setting and navigate to Burano. Depending on your starting point in Venice, you may need to transfer boats on the island of Murano (You may want to spend some time there before taking the second boat to Burano).
The total trip should take 45-60 minutes via boat. The boats are comfortable with enclosed bench seating and a few outdoor seats in the back of the boat. There are no services (food/restrooms) on board.
What To See in Burano
Much like Venice (check out our 24 hours in Venice Itinerary) Burano is best explored without a destination in mind. Once you arrive on your boat from Venice To Burano, walk along the main canal. As you wander the sidewalks lined with colorful building you’ll find shops and restaurants to explore.
The quaint island is most famous for its boldly colored houses that line the canals and island shore. Formerly the island depended on the fishing industry as its main source of revenue. This has largely been replaced by day-tripping tourist revenue.
Wandering into the streets away from the canals will give you fewer crowds. There will still be plenty of beautifully painted homes to admire, but no shops.
Be on the lookout for the famous leaning bell tower. The Church of Saint Martin Bishop was built in the 16th century. The signature bell tower tilts significantly to the side. I’m sure it’s fine.
Where To Shop in Burano
There is no shortage of great shopping during your Venice to Burano day trip. Many of the shops have the same things that you can find elsewhere in Venice (tourist trinkets, blown glass, Venetian masks, etc.)
Burano Lace Making
The island is famous for lace making. The world has coveted Venetian lace since the 16th century. There are plenty of shops selling various lace items, much of which is still produced by hand.
For €5, a visit to the Lace Museum (Museo del Merletto) will give you, to quote their website, “an impressive journey into the fascinating world of laces.”
What to Eat in Burano
Built as a fishing village, seafood is the best thing to eat on the island. Look for a place that serves goby fish risotto, a local rice dish. Make the most of your Venice To Burano day trip with a great lunch or early dinner.
The island is also famous for Bussola, a small lemon-flavored butter cookie shaped into a donut-like loop. Numerous bakeries are selling the treat fresh or in tins to share with your family and friends back home.
Best Instagram Spot in Burano
When in Burano find the Love Viewing Bridge. The tiny arched bridge crosses the canal at a bend. This is the perfect spot for your Instagram selfie with the boats and colorfully painted houses in the back. Tag us in the shot! (@NowGoSeeIt). How To Get Back to Venice From Burano
As your Venice To Burano day trip comes to an end, follow your steps back to the dock where you can catch frequent Vaporetto boat rides back to Venice. If you’re visiting in the high season or on a weekend, there can be a very long line waiting to board the boat. Plan to wait up to an hour for a ride.
You can easily see Burano and Murano (the famous glass-blowing island) on the same day. Read about our visit to Murano here.
