Often called the ‘Pearl of the Mediterranean’ the city of Palma is the capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands. The beautiful port city is located on the largest island in the chain, Mallorca.

Visiting Palma de Mallorca by Cruise Ship

It’s an easy walk from the ship to the city of Palma where you will find the below listed sites. We offer four top sights to see in one day. It’s a perfect list for those visiting by cruise ship. There’s no need for taxis, buses, or rideshare. The city is best explored on foot.

See the Arab Baths (Banys Àrabs)

Located a few short steps from the hustle of the main shopping quarter on a surprisingly quiet street the Arab Baths are a remnant of the time when the Moors ruled the island. Believed to have been built in the 10th century, the ancient baths are surrounded by a small tranquil garden.

A small fee is required for entry and can be paid at the main gate. A very small bit of information is on display in some of the adjoining rooms. The displays give some context to the ancient building.

Step Inside The Palma Cathedral

Officially called The Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca the Gothic cathedral is known locally as the Palma Cathedra or La Seu. Construction of the building started in 1229 and was completed about 400 years later.

Inside the cathedral, you will find 61 stained-glass windows. Try to plan your visit for the morning hours. The sunlight hits the stunning round rose window creating a spectacular illumination experience. The cathedral typically opens at 10 AM, but check the website for closures and changes.

If arriving by boat, the cathedral will be one of the first things you see.

Tour The Royal Palace of La Almudaina

Directly across from the cathedral is The Royal Palace of La Almudaina, an official residence of the Spanish royal family. It was built in the 14th century. If the royal family is out (which they almost always are) you can take a visit through the ancient halls.

The mixture of Gothic and Moorish architecture is the star of this visit. Stand in the often barren giant rooms and take in the majesty of the 700-year-old structure.

Tickets are €7 with discounts for kids and seniors. You can book ahead online, but there is really no need to.

Shop the Mercat de l’Olivar

Be sure to visit Mercat de l’Olivar. The huge historic hall is filled with vendors selling produce, meats, fish, and other items. It is the perfect place to sample local cuisines and Spanish Tapas.
