A Brief History of Winnipeg

The Red River and Assiniboine River converge at the heart of Winnipeg. This was an important crossroads for First Nations people. In the eighteenth century, French fur traders began using the city as a trading center, building a fort where the city now stands. The behemoth Hudson Bay Company joined the trade in 1812. The city flourished after the opening of the Canadian Pacific Highway in 1881 growing to become Canada’s third largest city.
